BBHC names five to Board of Trustees

Cody (BBHC) -- At its June 20, 2008, meeting, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center trustees appointed five new members to its board. Included are a teacher, a rancher, a public relations professional, a certified petroleum geologist, and a financial consultant. Four of the new trustees have served on historical center advisory boards.

The historical center functions with 39 trustees and 85 additional individuals serving on seven advisory boards for the center’s five museums, research library, and Cody Institute for Western American Studies. Trustees and advisory board members bring a broad spectrum of professional expertise and come to the center from 26 different states.

“We are so very fortunate to have the trustees we do,” former U.S. Senator from Wyoming and the historical center’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Alan K. Simpson, says. “They all have a passion for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and the Cody Country. They give of their time, talent, and treasure to assure us of our continued success.

Newly-appointed trustees are:

Ed Connors:

An avid collector of western art, Edward P. Connors of Englewood, Colorado, is a Yale graduate and retired history and math teacher who has been a member of the Whitney Gallery of Western Art advisory board for five years. Following his teaching career, he operated a world tour agency, acting as director and guide. He belongs to a number of environmental groups and is active in community organizations in the Denver area including Denver Botanic Gardens, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, local planning and zoning commission, Denver Literary Club, and Colorado Springs Museum of Fine Arts.

Mary Flitner:

Wyoming native Mary Flitner lives outside Greybull, Wyoming, where she’s an active partner with her husband in managing their cattle and horse ranch. Flitner has served on numerous state boards and commissions in Wyoming including Commission for Women, Intergovernmental Judicial Review, Wyoming Game and Fish Commission, and Board of Professional Responsibility for the Wyoming Bar Association. In addition, she has varied community interests such as library, public schools, county fair, 4-H, and planning commission. Flitner also serves on the Buffalo Bill Museum the advisory board.

Charles C. Francis:

Charles C. Francis is a Dallas, Texas, native currently residing in Washington, D.C. where he’s senior counselor and founding partner of the DCI Group, an independent public affairs firm. Francis was instrumental in organizing a gift to the center from the Rosewood Foundation in Dallas that named the historical center’s photography gallery in honor of his lifelong friend, John Bunker Sands. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and currently serves on the Board of Trustees of its Architecture Foundation. He began his career as a speechwriter and media representative for David Rockefeller, chairman of the board of Chase Manhattan Bank. Francis was named to the communications commission task force of the Bush/Cheney transition team and later to the Presidential Advisory Commission on HIV/AIDS.

Patrick R. McDonald:

Described as a “very interested in everything person,” Patrick R. McDonald has been a member of the advisory board of the Whitney Gallery of Western Art for the past two years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in geology and economics from Ohio Wesleyan University and a master’s degree in finance from New York University. A certified petroleum geologist, he is currently president of Nytis Exploration Company, an oil and gas exploration company in Evergreen, Colorado. McDonald is a consummate western art collector and enjoys many community activities.

John R. Woods:

John R. Woods, a financial analyst from St. Louis, Missouri, is also a member of the advisory board of the Cody Firearms Museum. He has served with a number of other organizations such as American Red Cross, St. Louis Eye Hospital, Missouri Historical Society, St. Louis County Revenue and Economy Commission, National Rifle Association, Winchester Club of America, and the American Society of Arms Collectors. Woods attended Miami University of Ohio and Washington University and has interests in history, genealogy, firearms, railroad-related groups, and a number of other collector organizations.
